Sport, clubs and the active life in Cairns

The Cairns environment and climate is ideal for sport, adventures and outdoor activities.

There are more than 400 sport and recreational clubs and facilities across the Cairns region taking in competitive leagues in at least 30 sports, including netball, basketball, rugby league, AFL, soccer, baseball, tennis, cricket, vigoro, polocrosse, hockey and lawn bowls.

If you are not interested in competitive sport, the Council offers a free Active Living program delivered by qualified trainers. Classes are held at six locations, including along the Esplanade.

Major sporting venues and teams

Cairns is a regular host venue for National League sporting events in football, rugby league, Australian Football League and is home to the NBL team, the Cairns Taipans.

Cairns Taipans - National Basketball League

Cairns is home to the only not-for-profit club left in the National Basketball League. We boast a loyal band of supporters, known as the Orange Army, and the team’s home ground is colloquially known as the Snake Pit.

Cairns Taipans home games are a popular, high-energy and family-friendly night or afternoon out. The team has made the finals series eight times in its history and has made an appearance in the NBL grand finals twice... but we’re yet to win a championship.

The Cairns International Tennis Centre in North Cairns features 12 International Tennis Federation standard hard courts including one show court as well as a clubhouse with function room, gym, pro shop, physio/massage rooms and meeting rooms.

The Centre regularly hosts national and international tennis tournaments, and serves as a tennis training facility for aspiring local talent with regular coaching programs, clinics and school holiday camps on offer.

Barlow Park multi-sports facility is the region's premier rugby league football and athletics stadium, featuring an eight-lane athletics track to IAAF standard, with grassed field, long jump pits, grandstand, corporate boxes, function room, eatery outlets, amenities and car parking. The grounds are also used for large-scale sporting matches, music festivals and expos.

The recently redeveloped Tobruk Memorial Pool in Cairns North offers has a FINA approved 50m Olympic swimming pool, 25m lap pool and a warm water therapy pool as well as a toddler splash area, the Flow Rider, a Café, two function rooms and retail shop.

  • AFL Cairns runs comeptitions for children, men and women. They deliver umpire courses and have volunteering and coaching opportunities. There are seven clubs in the local competition league.

Cairns Athletics runs a full program of regular, annual and special events for all ages in Cairns.

The Cairns Baseball League is made up of six clubs in the Cairns area. ​Senior Baseball is played in 3 Divisions for players from 15 and up. At its Trinity Beach grounds, Cairns Baseball League provide a high quality, playing venue for competitors of all ages and playing ability.

Cairns Basketball has competitions and development for everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability or background. Training and games are played at the Early Settler Stadium, known locally as 'The Fishtank', an air-conditioned facility in Manunda with several full courts and spectator capacity for more than 700 people. Children can start at Tiny Taipans or in Aussie Hoops, participate in  holiday camps, challenge themselves with Advanced Programs, represent Cairns, maybe even playing QBL or even in the NBL for Cairns!

15 cups and competitions, from over-50s to juniors and representative cups, are run through local cricket clubs in Cairns. Matches are held, administered by Cricket Far North, throughout the region at several dedicated grounds.

Cairns has two dedicated competitive gymnastics clubs. Several of the Police Citizens Youth Clubs in Cairns also offer competitive and recreational gymnastics classes.You (or your children) can dance every day of the week with five dance studios offering full programs across a range of dance genres from ballet to cheer to hip hop and contemporary. Community-style classes including  salsa and 80s are also on offer throughout the city.

Cairns Hockey was established over 90 years ago. Since then it has grown into a vibrant hockey association with four clubs and over 118 teams from Under 10 to Masters during the winter season. More than 60 plus teams play indoor, social and Walking Hockey. There is a balance of participation opportunities for everyone, talent pathway options as well as volunteer roles within the sport every time of the year.

If it’s the martial arts that interest you, Cairns has a wide selection. There are clubs which offer Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, Krav Maga, Karate, Boxing and more.

    The Cairns Netball Association provides netball opportunities to people from the ages of 4 years old to seniors for both women and men, boys and girls. Competitions include Juniors from NetsetGO to Junior Division 1 and Senior Divisions 1 – 5. The association offers opportunities and training to our volunteers in coaching, umpiring, scoring and administration. The association has 16 hard courts, four of which have roof covereage, 250 car space and a new club house.

  • Cairns District Rugby League has 11 teams in the competition, and is headquartered at Barlow Park. The league runs children's, men's and women's competitions, school holiday clinics as well as inter-city cups.
  • Touch football competitions are run out of Cairns by the Cairns Pirates and Gordonvale to the south of the city by the Gordonvale Outlaws.

Cairns has a great social country Rugby Union Competition each year. FNQ Rugby is made up of Member Clubs, referees and schools spread across the region from Innisfail in the South, to Port Douglas and surrounds in the North and West to the Tablelands. There are senior men's, women's, juniors' and school competitions.

Junior and senior soccer competitions are played on a Saturday in Cairns when hundreds of players converge on the Endeavour Park fields. Eleven clubs operate in the Cairns region, and several clubs from surrounding area also play in the Far North Queensland league. You can find a soccer or futsal club through the North Queensland chapter of Football Queensland.

As well as club soccer, Cairns has several soccer academies run by former professional players.

Softball FNQ's mission is to develop and administer all forms of softball throughout Far North Qld at all levels, with fairness, equity and enjoyment.

Our biggest aquatic complex is in Cairns North -Tobruk Memorial Pool - which features a 50-metre pool, built to FINA specifications.You can even play underwater hockey here.

Swimming pool complexes are also open at Smithfield, Woree, Gordonvale and Babinda.

The Sugarworld Waterpark in Edmonton, south of the city, is popular with families/ It features waterslides and is surrounded by beautiful parklands.

There are tennis clubs or courts in most suburbs around Cairns with excellent facilities. Cairns International Tennis Centre is also located in Cairns North.

We also have a very active Table Tennis Association in Cairns.

In the community

More than 450km of off-road paths and cycleways are available across the region, plus many on-road bike lanes so you can explore the beautiful region at your own pace. Residents enjoy a system of walkways and bike paths that allows them to traverse the city without having to cycle on roads. Discover the cycling and walking circuits around Cairns.

Council is in the middle of a project in 2021 to connect all of our beaches to the city via a shared path called the Northern Beaches Leisure Trail.

With this multi-use track, visitors and residents will be able to wander, ride, scoot or skate from the city to Palm Cove, taking in our beautiful beach and island views along the way.

Extreme sport, fitness and gyms

Cairns is home to more than 50 gyms, including women's-only, national fitness chains and 24-hour gyms.

We have Fairdinkum Crossfit in Cairns, and a Crossfit Dungeon. Six clubs are flying the flag for Crossfit in the Cairns region from south to north.

Bungee jumping, kite boarding on windy days at the northern beaches, a wakeboard park and epic downhill mountain bike tracks  - Cairns has a lot to offer adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers. All of these experiences are available within a 30-minute drive of the city centre in and around the northern suburb of Smithfield.

You will have to drive a little bit further for white water rafting, paddle-boarding down the river at Babinda, hang-gliding from a spot near the lookout between Cairns and Port Douglas, water skiiing at Tinaroo dam or jumping out of an aeroplane. All of these activities are not too far away - an hour's drive, maybe two.

Yoga and pilates studios and classes in Cairns are easier to find around the Edge HIll area and on the northern beaches, where sunrise and full moon stretching sessions are far more relaxing with the sound of small waves in the background. The Council also offers free pilates classes as part of its Active Living program on the Cairns Esplanade.
